Woking Young Musician of the Year
The 2018 competition was held at Christ Church in the town centre at 7.00pm on 3rd February.
A capacity audience (we had to put out more chairs!) enjoyed a brilliant concert with captivating performances by some of the up and coming young players from November's festival:
Hollie Tibbotts (flute)
Annie McChrystal (piano)
Sophie Kauer (cello)
Felix Rockhill (trombone)
Helen Michels (piano)
Sarah Etherington (cello)
The adjudicator, the Head of Strings from the Royal Academy of Music, Mark Messenger, said that he'd take something special away from all the performances he'd heard, but slected Helena Michels as the winner; Sophie Kauer was second and Hollie Tibbotts was third. It was also announced that Hollie was to receive the Woking Music Festival's summer school bursary which is awarded independently of the YM competition.

This was not the only entertainment in the evening. We also heard Greenfield School Chamber Choir who were awarded the Dame Ethyl Smyth Award (for the best performance of a piece by a female composer from the choral section this year); the winners of the Most Promising Young Actor Award, St Andrew's School; the winners of the Chamber Music Award, violin and harp duo, Imaan and Jamaal Kashim; and the two Junior Musicians of the Year, Isabella Mackie (oboe and recorder) and Tristan Bögler (piano).
As always, we were very grateful to Handel Pianos Ltd from Sunningdale for the loan of a superb Schimmel piano for the evening.
